Piper's Hemangioma: Second Scoop

Hi again! Here's me at the park with my mommy when I was a little over five months old. This is probably the point where my hemangioma reached it's high point. In my first few months, my birthmark kept growing and the color changed from a bright red to a darker red. It felt very full and firm to the touch. Later gray patches then began to show as you can see in my pictures. Our dermatologist told us that the gray patches could mean that the hemangioma is starting to involute and the blood vessels are starting to die. At this point in time, it didn't hurt me if you touched my birthmark. My mommy and daddy were hoping that my birthmark was going to start shrinking soon but instead it stayed about the same size and just changed color. It got lighter and the gray patches became more pronounced. We had a checkup in the middle of September and the dermatologist noticed we could press on the middle of the birthmark and it sunk in a little and bounced back. She said this was good because the hemangioma was becoming less full. She did warn to watch out for any crusty spots my birthmark and that it may start scabbing and ulcerate. Unfortunately about a week later two crusty spots appeared in the gray patches and they eventually formed scabs. The scabs kept getting bigger and eventually grew into one large scab that took up most of the hemangioma. The dermatologist recommended we use an antibiotic ointment called bactracin zinc to break down the scab. The edges of the scab started oozing yellow and green and I had to go on oral antibiotics for a while. The next month was very hard for me and I woke up every night because my birthmark hurt so much. I would cry on and off throughout the night and needed to be cuddled close to my mommy to sleep.
